Is Athens Safe? A Neighbourhood-by-Neighbourhood Guide
Athens is a safe city by any global standard — safer than Barcelona, Rome or Paris for violent crime. But like any capital, some neighbourhoods require more awareness than others. Here's an honest, neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood breakdown.

Safest Neighbourhoods
Kolonaki, Kifissia, Pangrati, Mets and Koukaki are the safest central areas — affluent residential neighbourhoods with active street life and strong communities. Families, elderly locals and young professionals fill the streets until late. Petralona, Neos Kosmos and Thiseio are also very safe, quiet residential areas. You can walk at any hour with normal awareness.
Tourist Areas (Safe but Watch for Pickpockets)
Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma and the Acropolis area are very safe in terms of personal safety — heavily policed and always busy. The main risk is pickpocketing, especially in the Monastiraki flea market (Sundays are worst) and on crowded metro platforms. Keep bags zipped and phones out of back pockets. The metro from Monastiraki to the airport is a known pickpocketing route — keep luggage close.
Areas Requiring More Awareness
Exarchia has Athens' most complicated reputation. By day it's full of students, cafes and bookshops — completely safe and fascinating. At night, avoid the streets immediately around the Polytechnic and stick to the main squares and cafe streets. Protests and demonstrations occasionally happen here — they're nearly always peaceful but can disrupt traffic. Omonia and the area around the train station (Larissa Station) can feel sketchy at night and are best avoided after dark — there's little reason for tourists to be there anyway.
Nightlife Areas
Gazi is busy and well-lit until 4-5am — the main streets around Kerameikos metro and Konstantinoupoleos are safe. Avoid empty side streets in very early morning hours. Psyrri is lively until 2am with a mixed crowd of diners and drinkers. The lanes around Iroon Square are fine; stick to well-lit streets. Monastiraki Square itself is always busy, but some of the surrounding side streets are dark and quiet late at night.
Practical Safety Tips
Use official taxis (yellow, with a meter) or ride-share apps (Uber connects to local taxis; FreeNow is widely used). Avoid unmarked 'taxis' at the airport. The metro is safe but keep valuables close at Syntagma, Monastiraki and Omonia stations. Athens tap water is safe to drink. Emergency number is 112 (European). Tourist police: +30 210 322 2230. In 2026, Athens remains one of Europe's safest capitals — millions of visitors have trouble-free trips every year.
