Athens Airport to City Centre: All Transport Options
Athens International Airport (ATH) is about 33km east of the city centre. You have four main options to reach central Athens — here's the breakdown with 2026 prices and local advice.

Metro (Line 3 — Blue Line)
The easiest option for most visitors. Trains run every 30 minutes from 6:30am to 11:30pm. Journey time is 40 minutes to Syntagma, 45 to Monastiraki. Cost: €9 one-way, €16 return (valid 48 hours). Buy tickets at the airport station machines (English menu, card accepted). Keep your ticket — you need it to exit. The metro connects directly to Syntagma (city centre), Monastiraki (old town), and Kerameikos (Gazi).
X95 Express Bus (24/7)
The X95 bus runs 24 hours a day between the airport and Syntagma Square. Journey time: 60-70 minutes depending on traffic. Cost: €5.50. Buses run every 15-30 minutes during the day, every 30-60 minutes late at night. The bus stop is outside Arrivals, between Exits 4 and 5. This is the best option for late-night arrivals when the metro isn't running. Buy tickets from the kiosk at the bus stop or from the driver (cash, small bills).
Taxi
Flat rate from the airport to central Athens: €40 during the day (5am-midnight), €55 at night (midnight-5am). The flat rate covers all charges including luggage, tolls and waiting time. Journey time: 35-50 minutes depending on traffic. Use the official taxi queue outside Arrivals — look for yellow cars with TAXI signs. Uber and FreeNow apps connect you to licensed taxis with upfront pricing (usually the flat rate). Avoid touts inside the terminal offering 'taxis' — they're unlicensed.
Private Transfer / Ride-Share
Welcome Pickups and similar services offer pre-booked private transfers with a driver meeting you at Arrivals. Cost: €45-55. Useful if you want a guaranteed English-speaking driver, baby seats, or are arriving very late. FreeNow (Greece's main ride-share app) also works from the airport and connects to licensed taxis.
Which Option for Your Neighbourhood
Staying in Syntagma, Plaka or Kolonaki: Metro to Syntagma (40 min) or X95 bus. Monastiraki or Psyrri: Metro to Monastiraki (45 min). Petralona, Thiseio: Metro to Monastiraki then Line 1 two stops (total 50 min). Koukaki, Neos Kosmos: Metro to Syntagma then Line 2 (total 50 min). Pangrati, Mets: Metro to Evangelismos or Syntagma then 15-min walk. Gazi: Metro to Kerameikos (direct on Line 3). If you're carrying heavy luggage or arriving late at night, take a taxi — the €40 flat rate is worth it for door-to-door service.
