Two days in Athens is tight but totally doable — if you plan smart. This itinerary skips the tourist traps and follows a local rhythm: early sites, leisurely lunches, sunset drinks and late taverna dinners.
Start at 8:00 at the Acropolis — the gates open at 8am and the early slot means cooler temperatures and thinner crowds. Spend 90 minutes exploring the Parthenon, Erechtheion and the panoramic views. Exit via the southern slope, passing the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Head straight to the Acropolis Museum (opens 9am) — the top-floor Parthenon gallery is the highlight. By 12:30 you're done with the big sights. Walk into Plaka for lunch at a traditional taverna on Adrianou or a side lane — avoid the main tourist strip and look for places with handwritten Greek menus.
After lunch, wander the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus — it's the best-preserved Doric temple in Greece and surprisingly uncrowded. Walk up Apostolou Pavlou in Thiseio and grab a terrace seat at one of the cafes facing the Acropolis by 6pm — this is Athens' best sunset ritual. For dinner, cross into Petralona for authentic tavernas on Troon Street, or stay in Psyrri for live music and meze. End the night with a rooftop cocktail at A for Athens or 360 Cocktail Bar in Monastiraki.
Start at Syntagma Square at 9am to catch the Changing of the Guard, then walk through the National Gardens to the Panathenaic Stadium — the all-marble stadium from the 1896 Olympics. Continue into Pangrati for brunch at one of Athens' best cafe streets (Varnava Square). Spend late morning exploring the Benaki Museum or the Cycladic Art Museum in Kolonaki.
For your final afternoon, choose your adventure: the National Archaeological Museum in Exarchia (world-class, 2 hours), the Monastiraki Flea Market (best on Sundays), or a tram ride to the Athens Riviera for a swim at a beach club. Have an early dinner at a taverna near your neighbourhood and head to the airport — Monastiraki to Airport is a direct 45-minute metro ride on Line 3.
