Mets
Mets is Athens' best-kept secret — a tiny, hilly neighbourhood tucked between Pangrati and the Kallimarmaro Stadium, named after a 19th-century beer garden (a corruption of the German 'Metz'). Its neoclassical houses, winding lanes and sweeping city views give it a village-like atmosphere just minutes from the centre.
Where to eat & drink
Mets is small but well-fed — Markou Mousourou, the main street, has a handful of neighbourhood tavernas and cafes frequented almost entirely by locals. Kafeneio Ta Mets is a classic ouzeri; for modern dining, Pangrati's scene is a 5-minute walk. The neighbourhood's hilltop position means many cafes have Acropolis views.
What to see
The Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) dominates Mets' western flank. Ardittos Hill, the wooded slope behind the stadium, offers quiet walking paths and some of the best panoramic views in Athens — the Acropolis, Lycabettus and the sea all visible from one spot. The First Athens Cemetery and its sculptural tombs border the north. The Temple of Olympian Zeus is a 10-minute walk.
Getting around
Akropoli metro (line 2 / Red) and Evangelismos (line 3 / Blue) are both a 10-12 minute walk. The neighbourhood sits on several bus and trolleybus routes. Syntagma is a 20-minute walk through the National Gardens.
Safety
Mets is a quiet, upscale residential area — extremely safe at all hours. Streets are well-lit and the neighbourhood has a strong local community. The hillside location means some streets are steep and quiet at night.
